Historical figure Dona Inés Suárez tells of travelling to the New World to accompany the conquistadors. She goes in search of her missing husband, Juan but eventually becomes the mistress of Don Pedro de Valdivia, the conqueror of Chile. The two lovers aim to found a new society based on Christian and egalitarian principles but their aims are undone by Valdivia's personal desire for glory.
